"Exercise adds years to your life" is one of those claims repeated so often it stops meaning anything specific. The actual research is more interesting than the slogan โ€” and the good news is that you don't need to be an athlete to capture most of the benefit.

The headline number

Large long-term cohort studies consistently find that people who meet basic activity guidelines โ€” roughly 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, about 20 minutes a day โ€” have meaningfully lower mortality risk than sedentary people, with several major studies putting the gap at somewhere around 3 to 5 additional years of life expectancy on average.

The part that surprises people: diminishing returns

Here's the detail that gets lost in "more exercise is always better" messaging: the biggest jump in benefit happens at the very start of the curve โ€” going from doing nothing to doing something. The difference between a completely sedentary person and someone doing modest regular activity is larger than the difference between someone doing a moderate amount and someone doing a lot more. Research on this specifically has found the mortality-risk curve flattens out well before elite-athlete levels of training โ€” meaningful additional benefit continues, but each extra hour buys progressively less than the first one did.

Practically, this means the person who goes from zero exercise to a daily 20-minute walk is capturing a large share of the available benefit โ€” becoming a serious runner adds more on top of that, but with smaller marginal gains.

Is sitting really "the new smoking"?

This phrase overstates the comparison โ€” sedentary behavior's mortality effect, while real, is smaller in magnitude than smoking's. Someone who sits for ten hours and then does a 30-minute workout still carries some of the sedentary-time risk.
